WEMIN and social prescription

Social Prescription is an innovative project of local public health service,
created by some doctors. It is based on the perception that many patients, more than 30% of whom are immigrants, turn to the doctor not because they are truly sick, but because they feel alone or emotionally unbalanced.
When these situations are identified, the social worker of the health center prescribes a “social remedy”, for example volunteering in an organization of the territory, participating in Portuguese classes or in activities that allow to create a network of contacts, etc.
Meetings with all local social partners are held periodically to identify such opportunities. The last of these meetings was held on November 7, and Renovar a Mouraria presented WEMIN and the opportunities this project represents for migrant women and for women in the community, as well. Some of the women participating in the Portuguese Language and Culture training joined through their participation in Social Prescription.

“Há Manhãs” – WEMIN and the international women breakfast in Lisbon

“Há Manhãs” in Portuguese means “there are tomorrows”, and this is the name Renovar a Mouraria gave to the international breakfast for women created with the main goal of building a local women community. Breakfasts take place once a month on Sunday, bringing together Portuguese women, as well as migrants and refugees to jointly celebrate, learn and share cultures, exchange ideas and gastronomy of the world.

Portuguese language and culture training starts in Lisbon

The training started in Lisbon on 29 October with a group of 23 migrants and refugee women, form 11 different countries: Bangladesh, Guine Bissau, Ucraine, Nepal, Syria, Pakistan, Guine Conacry, India, Argentina, Nigeria, and Turkey.

Finding new opportunities to Wemin participants

Within the Portuguese Language and Culture course, students had the opportunitie to learn storytelling techniques with the aim of developing the capacity to speak about themselves in a positive way, in order to reinforce self-esteem and overcome traumatic situations.

As a result of this training, the possibility of participating in some of the Migrantor Urban Routes Intercultural projects arise. The proposal was to share a little of their culture and their personal history.

4 women accepted this challenge, and 3 tours were held on 10, 17 and 24 March.

Wemin Short Policy Guide in “Travessia” Internacional conference in Lisbon

Associação Renovar a Mouraria held an international conference on the cross-border issue of migrant and refugee women, in the past 15th and 16th March, Lisbon, called “Travessia – Women and girls searching for shelter”

Within the framework of this conference, the Short Policy Guide was presented to all parliamentary groups of the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic. The challenge was to build a set of objective recommendations within the national context, based on the guide and testimonies of refugee women who were shared the same afternoon, at another time of the conference, to be read in the conclusion moment of the last day of the event.

Wemin project at Lisbon celebrate de Women Day with a welcome walk for the portuguese language and culture course students delivered by Migrantour women guides.We had the opportunity to get to know the touristic Lisbon, learn about the city history, the role of important portuguese women and share traditions among everyone.It was a great experience and a way to promote the friendship among the students

Breakfast at Lisbon Indu Community

Portuguese and migrant women, gathered in the Indu Community of Lisbon. We had the opportunity to learn about the history of Indian people in Lisbon, the role of the
contemporary woman in society according to the indu culture. We visit the temple and share culinary specialties form Portugal, India, Nepal, Brasil, Espanha e Paquistão.

Portuguese Language and Culture training course goes on…

The first training course ended in February and a new group, around 40 women, divided in two different classes, started the language and cultural training, at Renovar a Mouraria Community House. Those women came from more than 10 different countries ( Nepal, Paquistan, Somalia, Ukraine, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Argentina, Nigeria, Turkey, Guiné Conakry, India and Sierre Leone).
