On 6th March 2019 Southside Partnership, one of the partners in the WEMIN project, organised an International Women’s Day Breakfast. These breakfasts are held at least six times a year in various locations in South County Dublin, Ireland. This is a drop in event that runs over the course of a morning on a weekday, usually a Wednesday, each one has a specific theme. The theme for this breakfast was International Women’s Day 2019.

One hundred women from 34 different countries attended the event. Among the participants were women who are attending English classes through the WEMIN project. In the morning, Daniela Naab, coordinator of WEMIN in Ireland, talked about upcoming local elections and reminded people that if they were resident in Ireland they may be entitled to vote.

A workshop was held for migrant women participating in the WEMIN Programme on Interview Skills on 6th June 2019. This workshop was a follow on for those who had already participated in the four job-seeking skills workshops in March and April. The women who participated in this workshop are now seeking employment. Some of the women have recently had a change in their immigration status, which now allows them to work.

The workshop focused on topics such as types of interviews, what to expect, how to answer questions, communciation in advance, interview etiquette and dress codes etc. The most common interview style now used in competency based interviews and participated looked at ways of providing structured answers to such questions. Participants also asked questions about their specific career interests and how to explain career gaps. Cultural issues and cross-cultural communication in interviews was also explored. The women found the workshop very beneficial and expressed an interest in a follow up workshop.

On 19th June 2019 the WEMIN Programme Cityscape Art Project for migrant and Irish women was launched by Southside Partnership. This event was held in the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland and it followed a similar format to the International Women’s Breakfasts. A total of 80 women attended, with 38 women coming from 3rd countries and the remainder from Ireland and the EU. 18 different 3rd countries were represented on the day, with some of the women attending a WEMIN event for the first time.

The two community artists who have been engaged to facilitate the WEMIN art project on multicultural cityscapes provided an overview of how the community art programme would work. The idea was that the women would work together to build their ideal global city. This would incorporate elements of what they thought their ideal city should have. It would draw on the experiences of living in different towns and cities throughout the world and the positive features they remember from them. The media to work with would include a variety of recycled materials including paper, cardboard, and foil. It would also draw on patterns and designs that might be familiar to the women from their countries of origin.

At the breakfast the women worked on the first taster session, which gave them a flavour for the sessions that will commence in September. A variety of materials (cardboard, recycled materials, paper etc.) were used. The women worked in six groups and commenced a process of thinking about their ideal city and what kind of features made it positive. The responses generated included both physical features (layout, buildings, traffic flows, infrastructure, play spaces, physical landscape etc.) and social features (e.g. health system, safety, educational opportunities etc.). They then started a process of building such a city, using the materials provided.

In September and October we held our final English language and communication classes under WEMIN. We had a mixture of both new women attending and some returnees from previous classes. These classes were held once weekly for two hours in Furry Hill Community Centre and in the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland. The women who attended enjoyed their classes and many asked for them to continue. The emphasis was on conversation and everyday topics that the women might encounter. The evaluation forms and oral feedback from participants were very positive and showed that women felt that their language had improved and they enjoyed the classes and the rapport within the group and with the tutor. Many of the participants of the language classes also participated in the arts and crafts activities of Work Package 5 and the empowerment and mentoring sessions.

The WEMIN Project is now drawing to a close in Ireland and all the activities with the women have ended as we enter the final reporting phase. WEMIN has made a big difference to the lives of the women who have participated and it has complemented the existing Women’s Programme of the Southside Partnership. We have benefited also from the positive collaboration with our EU partners and the sharing of learning and good practice in the integration of migrant and refugee women.
